A letter to the European Commission

Together with 54 European organizations we have sent a letter to the President of the European Commission Juncker, the Secretary General of the European Commission Selmayr and the DG Environment, Energy and Growth asking not to postpone the adoption of a package of measures to the next legislature, which will make EU save 5% of its electricity consumption, as well as define stringent requirements in terms of product recyclability and repairability.

Specifically, these are 20 measures relating to Eco-Design and Energy Labelling regulations that should have been approved by this legislature; repeated vetoes postponed the adoption of these measures until today, a few months before the European elections, with the real possibility that the whole package can be frozen waiting for the new Commission to take office, with the risk that its implementation will be deliberated not before the end of 2019.

The Ecodesign and Energy Labelling regulations re among those that have achieved the best results in terms of reducing energy consumption, use of natural resources and greenhouse gas emissions and are key to ensuring the success of the EU strategies aimed at tackling climate change and starting real circular economy.
