Run for the Environment | Charity Challenge 2021 \ Monte Barro

We are thrilled to be part of this year's Virtual Charity Challenge!

This is a 5 or 10 km solidarity run (or walk) to support a charity of your choice, including Eliante for the Ambiente group. Once the course has been completed, the organizer of the Challenge Runcard will donate one euro to the charity indicated by you. Later, you can choose whether to add your free donation!

The next challenge will take place on 23 and 24 January. Today we propose a new path: the Monte Barro Park is one of the special places where Eliante puts into practice its Environmental Education activities. In this protected area of the pre-Alpine area, Eliante organizes educational stays, environmental, archaeological and ethnographic workshops, nature walks for schools and families and ad hoc paths designed together with teachers, to convey respect and love for nature in the field.

The itinerary, for a short stretch on a broken road and then entirely on a mule track, winds along the southern slope of the Monte Baro Park going up from Galbiate towards the Tourist and Cultural Center of the Hermitage, with a height difference of about 350 meters and total round trip of about 7 kilometers.

In Galbiate, you can park your car in Piazzale Europa and from here quickly reach Via del Parco, where you will find the signs towards the Hermitage that you will have to follow to the end. Once you reach the Fornace area, the route takes the ancient mule track traveled by those who went up to the church of Santa Maria, the only surviving testimony of the ancient Hermitage built by the Franciscan Friars on Monte Barro starting from the fifteenth century. Also at the Hermitage it is possible to visit the Archaeological Museum of Barro, which preserves the evidence of an important fortified site from the Gota period (V - VI century AD) and take advantage of the presence of the bar - restaurant and the hostel with about fifty beds .

On the way back, a short detour allows you to reach the panoramic terrace at piazzale degli Alpini and the archaeological area of the Piani di Barra with the remains of the great Goth settlement.
